The Children’s Church program at Council
Community Church is designed to teach kids the same Bible message
that their parents are learning from the Pastor’s sermon.
Kindergarten through third grade and fourth through fifth grade
are taught the pastor’s message aimed at their age group.
The younger group generally enjoys a period of singing worship
songs followed by a lesson and then a craft that relates to the
lesson. The older group sometimes joins the younger group for
music. Then they move into their own classroom where the lesson
is taught with plenty of discussion and interaction. Bible drills
(racing to find a particular verse first) and Bible charades are
a popular way to finish the time out. With both age groups an
emphasis is placed on how the message can be applied to the
children’s lives.
During the week the children’s
church leaders who will be teaching that Sunday meet with the
pastor. The pastor who is teaching that week goes through the
section of scripture that will be taught. All sermons at Council
Community Church are based on scripture. Generally our two
pastors choose a particular book of the Bible and then teach
distinct sections until the entire book has been presented. The
children’s church leaders don’t miss any of this
teaching. The weeks that these leaders are teaching the kids they
have the opportunity to learn the lesson in a small group setting
with the pastor. The discussions in this small group of three to
five people can lead to a very clear understanding of the
section. And, taking a lesson aimed at adults and making it
interesting and understandable for the kids gives these leaders a
chance to become thoroughly familiar with the scripture.
The
concept of teaching the children the same lesson that their
parents learn is meant to encourage discussions later in the day.
Learning scripture as a family makes these lessons more
meaningful to the children and gives their parents the
opportunity to add their own emphasis and clarification.
The
leaders working in the children’s church love kids and love
our Lord. They are teaching the children because they want them
to develop a strong faith in Jesus and a clear understanding of
the Bible. There is always a need for additional children’s
church leaders. If you would like to join them, or if you would
like more information about the program, talk to Jan Cheverton.
Jan is the head of the Children’s Church and has been an
enthusiastic and exciting leader here for more than 20 years.
